The Absence of War is Not Peace: Chandrika Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka 1994 – 2005

The Center for Politics hosted a presentation to a capacity audience in the University of Virginia Rotunda Dome Room by the immediate past president of Sri Lanka, The Honorable Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. President Kumaratunga spoke about Sri Lanka’s 26 year long civil war, the war’s conclusion, challenges to a lasting peace, and answered numerous questions.

President Kumaratunga entered mainstream politics in 1993 when elected Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council and became Prime Minister in August 1994 after her party won the parliamentary elections. She was elected twice as Executive President in 1994 and 1999 and served in that office until November 2005.

This event was the latest in a series of activities hosted by the Center for Politics in connection to Sri Lanka.
