Daniel S. Alcorn
Board of Advisors
Daniel S. Alcorn (Dan) is a graduate of both the University’s College and School of Law. He is a practicing attorney who, among other practice areas, handles federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) cases and has successfully argued precedent setting FOIA cases before the federal trial and appellate courts in Washington, D.C. Dan served on the Obama for President campaign Government Reform Policy Committee advising on FOIA issues, leading to President Obama's unprecedented pro-FOIA/pro-open government policy directive to the heads of federal agencies issued January 21, 2009.
Dan is also a leader in civic affairs in Northern Virginia, having served on the board of the Metro Washington Airports Authority that operates Reagan National and Dulles International Airports. He chaired the Tysons Corner Task Force that revised the master plan for Tysons Corner, and helped found the Dulles Corridor Rail Association that has successfully advocated extending Metrorail to Dulles Airport. Dan served as a Democratic Party chair in Northern Virginia and member of the steering and central committees of the Democratic Party of Virginia for fifteen years. Dan has also served as President of the Ballantrae Citizens Association and as a chair of the McLean Citizens Association Transportation Committee.
Dan’s interest in the Center for Politics arises out of Thomas Jefferson’s vision for the University as an institution to educate and prepare young leaders to carry forward the American democracy. Dan hopes that through the efforts of the Center, new generations of young people can be inspired to be involved in civic and political affairs to strengthen our democracy. Dan has supported the Center’s activities since shortly after it was founded.
