Voter Registration
We participate in the National Campaign for Political & Civic Engagement, a partnership of 20 universities and colleges with academic programs in politics. Its priorities, directed towards college students, are to establish:
- A relationship with electoral politics
- A focus on career development
- A foundation in civic education
Our efforts to address these priorities ensure that we continue to set leadership standards for our peers on how to engage people in the political process, in particular through our internship program, Youth Leadership Initiative, Global Perspectives on Democracy, and our Student Voter Registration Coalition.
The Student Voter Registration Coalition began in 2004 to engage University of Virginia and Piedmont Virginia Community College student leaders in the voter registration process. Two interns, guided by Center staff, coordinate with student groups, university departments, and Charlottesville City and Albemarle County voter registration departments.
By concentrating on campus-based and student-led voter education, registration, and get-out-the-vote drives, we comply with the Higher Education Act of 1998, which requires that all academic institutions provide voter registration materials to students, and we foster and encourage a sense of civic responsibility and engagement among college students.
