National Symposium on Youth Civic Engagement
Throughout this presidential election year, the University of Virginia Center for Politics will host the National Symposium on Youth Civic Engagement, a concentrated effort to encourage informed participation in the electoral process among the youngest generation. Events will be held at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Washington, DC and beyond, and the exciting participant line-up will include America’s top political scholars, journalists, and practitioners.
This year's events
The goals of the National Symposium on Youth Civic Engagement are to:
- Encourage informed participation in the electoral process
- Examine why the youngest generation feels the greatest detachment from government and politics, and what we can do to fix this disconnect
- Create a forum for both scholars and practitioners to discuss promising, innovative research in the field of youth civic engagement
- Collaborate with civic-minded organizations to encourage young people to make voting a habit, beginning in 2004
- Provide opportunities for young people to engage in a dialogue with elected officials to learn first-hand the value of political participation
- Provide opportunities for young people to express their collective concerns to elected officials
- Explore opportunities for people under the age of 18 to participate in the political process
- Discuss ways that young people participate beyond the singular act of voting
- Serve as a resource to the media on the topic of youth civic engagement
- Provide tools for parents and teachers to help make politics interesting and relevant to young people
