Since 1998, the annual conferences of the Virginia Political History Project bring together friends, family, political professionals, legislators, and the public in a continuing effort to preserve an oral history of modern Virginia politics. In partnership with the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, the University of Virginia Center for Politics has examined the administrations of Virginia's recent former governors and other high-ranking elected officials, and explored the dynamics of various institutions of Virginia government. This year, we turn our attention to the women who have had a significant impact on the politics and governance of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Virginia Women and Politics Conference, held on Friday, July 21, 2006 at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, will feature remarks and panel discussions by women who have served the Commonwealth in a variety of elective and appointive offices. These women will not only share their experiences in politics, they will provide insight and encouragement for future generations of female leaders in Virginia. This program is held in conjunction with the Center for Politics' National Symposium on Women and Politics, a year-long series of national events evaluating how women are impacting politics, both as elected officials and political insiders.

Free and Open to the Public, Registration Required

As part of the Center for Politics' ongoing efforts to increase the level of civic engagement in Virginia and throughout the nation, the Virginia Women and Politics Conference and luncheon are free and open to the public, but registration is required.
