Awards for Civic Excellence

The Center for Politics takes a broad approach to civic and political attitudes, engagement, and knowledge in an effort to effectively connect individuals with their roles and responsibilities in a self-governing, civic society. These important components of political and civic life are defined by the Center for Politics as follows:

- Civic and Political Attitudes, Virtues and Values: Those outlooks, qualities, and standards fundamental to participation in civic life, politics, and government.

- Civic and Political Engagement: The direct observation of, participation in, and/or influence of the political process in America, specifically as such relates to political campaigns and elections, political movements, and the governing and policy-making arenas.

- Civic and Political Knowledge: The intellectual skills and textbook facts necessary to observe and comprehend the mechanics and institutions of government and the political process in America; specifically, those skills and facts central to knowledge of political campaigns and elections, political movements, and the governing and policy-making arenas.

To address all of the above, the Center will grant Awards for Civic Excellence (ACE) to University of Virginia undergraduate students and educators registered with the Youth Leadership Initiative at the Center for Politics. Funding for the ACE Awards is made possible by a generous contribution from U.Va. professor and Center for Politics director, Larry J. Sabato.

ACE Awards for undergraduate students’ internships in politics and government

The Center for Politics invites U.Va. undergraduate students to apply for limited stipends to assist with internships in politics and government. Academic credit at U.Va. will not be granted through the ACE program. Students, not the Center for Politics, are responsible for researching and securing individual internship placements. Student internship placements may include participation in civic-related community outreach, political campaigns, voter registration efforts, and offices of elected officials. In distributing the awards to students, the Center for Politics ACE committee will strive to ensure balance among political parties and ideologies. All awards, including the final dollar amount, are at the discretion of the ACE committee. Applications may be downloaded from the link below and are due to the Center for Politics by April 18, 2008, at 5:00 p.m.
