National Campaign for Political & Civic Engagement
The Center for Politics is a part of the National Campaign for Political & Civic Engagement, a consortium of 20 universities and colleges with academic programs in politics. Its priorities, directed towards college students are to establish:
- A relationship with electoral politics
- A foundation in civic education
- A focus on career development
The Center addresses these priorities through activities and programs such as our student Voter Registration Coalition, our internship program, an annual career panel, and the Youth Leadership Initiative.
Voter Registration Coalition
The student Voter Registration Coalition began in 2004 as an effort by the Center for Politics to engage University of Virginia and Piedmont Virginia Community College student leaders in the voter registration process. The Coalition is primarily coordinated by Center interns who work with student groups and the university community. This is a student-led effort, but the Center provides guidance, training and resources, and facilitates a relationship with the city and county voter registration offices.
By concentrating on campus-based and student-led voter education, registration and get-out-the-vote drives, we comply with the Higher Education Act of 1998, which requires that all academic institutions provide voter registration materials to students, and we foster and encourage a sense of civic responsibility and engagement among college students.
