Advancement for the Future:
A Message from H. Edward Mann

To those of you I have not met, I'd like to introduce myself. I am Horace Edward Mann (known to my friends as "Chip"), the new Director of Development for the Center for Politics.

After 30-plus years as a road warrior for various political candidates, grass-roots causes, as well as a stint as the Executive Director of the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission, I am truly excited about being formally associated with the Center for Politics. I became familiar with the staff when the Center created the official educational website for the Jamestown Commemoration. I am continually impressed by the professionalism and work ethic of Larry and the staff, and their commitment to the mission and goals of the Center.

The Center was founded on big ideas, but with a shoestring budget. The Center has always been very frugal with its resources; and over the past 12 years, despite regular decreases in public funding and subsequent reductions in staff, it has still managed to expand its research and outreach. As an example of the expansion - today the Youth Leadership Initiative is one of the largest national, public service/public outreach programs offered by the University of Virginia, and is the chief civic education program of its kind in the nation. Over 50,000 teachers are served by YLI, and well over a million school children use this program every single year.

I am building on the efforts of my predecessors by working to enhance effective marketing of the Center's mission. An early decision I expect to focus my efforts on the Center's five core competencies: Civics Education; International Outreach; Public Involvement and Politics; International and Domestic Curriculum and Scholarships. Further development of fundraising strategies is taking place to expand the public's knowledge of the Center and its incredible programs. I am professionally dedicated to the success of the Center for Politics.

All of us at the Center would be grateful if you considered a gift - at any level - to assist its work, and I hope this information gives you a better understanding of the challenges that confront us. With your support I'm certain the Center for Politics will prosper as never before. I hope you'll call on me if I can be of assistance to you.

Thank you to all donors in the 2010 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010). View Honor Roll >>
