Defenders of Democracy

The Center for Politics at UVA in partnership with the 10th Collective is producing a documentary exploring what led to the January 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. States Capitol, Congress and the electoral certification process through the first-hand accounts of those who literally defended democracy on that day.

Moving beyond the actual attacks, the film then explores how some of the officers sought justice and accountability in order to prevent future violence and attacks on the electoral process and American political institutions. The film also explores the challenges they have faced in speaking out and being in the public sphere while continuing full-time duty, including testifying before the U.S. House select committee investigating January 6, 2021 and in the trials of those who perpetuated the attacks.

In addition, spouses of fallen officers share stories about what their partners faced on January 6, 2021. They reveal not only their personal trauma, but how they are coping with their personal tragedies by advocating for better public policies and mental healthcare provisions for law enforcement. This is a powerful film highlighting the people on the front lines defending our democracy and dealing with the aftermath.
