New Mexico (02) House 2010

Crystal Ball Outlook: Leans R

Democratic candidate: Harry Teague, Incumbent

Republican candidate: Steve Pearce, former state Representative

Recent updates from the Crystal Ball

Background:

Democratic incumbent Harry Teague faces Republican challenger Steve Pearce in the hopes of winning his second term as Representative of New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District. The district is 49% Hispanic and 5% Indian. Also, the district is politically diverse, with some areas being very conservative, other areas being strongly Democratic, and other areas being politically moderate.

In his first term, Teague has voted with his party 90% of the time and some of his votes may be questioned. Teague is at a slight disadvantage given the anti-incumbent mood throughout the country and he needs to raise more money and generate voters’ excitement to win this competitive race. His opponent, Pearce, has the advantage of being a former Representative of the 2nd Congressional District as well as his party’s support and his ability to successfully raise money for his campaign. For these reasons, this race Leans Republican.
