Michigan (01) House 2010

Crystal Ball Outlook: Leans R

Democratic candidate: Gary McDowell, State Senator

Republican candidate: Dan Banishek, physician

Recent updates from the Crystal Ball

Background:

With Rep. Stupak not running for reelection, this is an open race. The first district includes the Upper Peninsula and 16 northern counties on the Lower Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula is longtime democratic territory, while parts of the Lower Peninsula are either moderate or heavily Republican. The mixed political leanings of the region coupled with the fact that Michigan has been hard hit by the recession should make this a hard fought race.

The primary is on August 3rd and there is one Democratic candidate, State Senator Gary McDowell. On the Republican side, the candidates are state Senator Jason Allen, physician Dan Benishek, ’02/’04/’06 nominee Don Hooper, attorney Linda Goldthorpe, Patrick Donlon, and Tom Stillings. For now, this race is Leans Republican.
