Howard Ernst

Howard Ernst received his Ph.D. in 2000 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Government and Foreign
Affairs at the University of Virginia. While at the University of Virginia, Ernst received
several academic awards and fellowships, including the Governor's Fellowship, Bradley Fellowship,
and University of Virginia's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertation Fellowship.
Professor Ernst's research focuses on citizen influence on sub-national politics and
environmental public policy.
His first book, Dangerous
Democracy? The Battle Over Ballot Initiatives in America was co-edited with Larry Sabato and
Bruce Larson and published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2001. Professor Ernst has recently completed
his second book,
Chesapeake Bay Blues: Scicence, Politics, and the Struggle to Save the Bay (
Rowman & Littlefield 2003).
Ernst serves as a Senior Scholar at the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia and
as an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department of the United States Naval
Academy.
